Job Description JOB SUMMARY

Performs professional librarian work at the entry level as a cataloger within the TWU Libraries. Work involves basic knowledge of current electronic, computer and other library technological systems (including hardware and software), familiarity with professional cataloging practices and standards, and project management. Work is performed under general supervision and performance is based upon completion of assignments and results obtained. The performance evaluation is conducted through the performance evaluation system in accordance with the University Policies & Procedures.


ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Assistant Director of Libraries for Collections & Technical Services

Supervises: Supervises library assistants and/or student assistants


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
May include, but not limited to the following:

Maintains bibliographic control of library records and materials
Oversees all cataloging functions for TWU Libraries
Demonstrates self-motivation and individual initiative
As the only professional cataloger on staff, provides leadership and direction in cataloging
Performs complex professional and administrative work in the operation of cataloging
Develops expertise with emerging technologies
Leads and participates in innovative library projects
Assists in the development of cataloging policies and procedures
Assists in the evaluation of cataloging services and resources
Prepares reports, gathers statistical data, creates and updates cataloging documentation
Participates in discussions, gathers information from professional colleagues and library associations, and is committed to continued personal and professional development
Assists in interviewing, hiring, scheduling, training, supervising, and evaluating staff in the Technical Services area of the library


SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Promotes access to information through instruction, service, and effective cataloging
Delivers professional cataloging services to library users
Conducts comprehensive research on current cataloging practices and standards
Trains personnel in cataloging and database maintenance responsibilities
Performs other duties as requested

EDUCATION

Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution, or its equivalent. Second Master’s degree desirable.

EXPERIENCE

Experience in an academic library or closely related field strongly preferred; experience with cataloging, metadata, library management systems and electronic cataloging products and tools preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - The following are essential:

Ability to use an automated cataloging system and OCLC’s WorldCat
Working knowledge of office practices, methods, and workflow for service needs
Knowledge of AACR2 Rev., LCRI, LCCS, LCSH, MARC21, RDA, and CONSER for bibliographic, holdings, and authority data
Ability to be a problem solver with a vision for the library as a whole
Ability to perform detailed computer work
Ability to learn and use library related software and systems
Ability to supervise and motivate others
Ability to use library resources effectively
Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment
Ability to coordinate work with other employees, providing direct instruction and supervision
Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize, analyze, and prioritize projects and objectives and to exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public
Ability to communicate and work effectively with others in writing, orally, by telephone or e-mail, and in person
Ability to represent the department and University in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner
Ability to use a personal computer, scanner, and other office equipment

The employee must have the ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include ability to distinguish the nature of objects by using the eye.


WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employees are responsible for performing their duties in an environment that is free from discrimination, intimidation, coercion or harassment, including sexual harassment. Work is performed primarily indoors. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
SAFETYAssists in the creation of a culture of safety and environmental protection by performing work safely in accordance with departmental safety procedures. Operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work conditions or practice to supervisor.


TASK LIST: Librarian I (Cataloger)

Provides leadership and management of all library cataloging of materials in all formats and languages
In-depth knowledge of current cataloging procedures and standards which includes both original and copy cataloging duties
Knowledge of current library practices in cataloging and authority control; maintains national cataloging standards; organizes projects
Creates, edits, and updates records to ensure database integrity
Notifies library staff regarding cataloging issues and changes
Is team-oriented and adaptable to a rapidly changing environment
Supports the management of cataloging and database maintenance activities and services
Provides technical assistance to other staff regarding cataloging tools
Assists in the testing of new technology releases and updates
Tracks and reports cataloging and database maintenance statistics
Trains personnel on an ongoing basis in cataloging and database maintenance activities and projects
Writes and updates cataloging documentation and test scripts
Provides expertise in utilization of electronic cataloging products and tools; in-depth knowledge of current technological practices in the area of bibliographic control
Demonstrates comprehensive functionality in the cataloging module of local library system and in using OCLC and other cataloging products
Utilizes automation to the fullest extent possible
Uses independent judgment in consultation with other librarians regarding cataloging issues
Keeps abreast of current trends in bibliographic control
Initiates change in cataloging processes to reflect current practices and efficiencies
Participates in professional development activities and committee work
Performs other duties as requested
