| Job Description |
The University of California, Irvine School of Law is the first new law school to be established at a member institution of the Association of American Universities and a public university in California in half a century. The Head of Research Services will have the opportunity to participate in developing the new library and in implementing our vision to create the ideal law school for the 21st century. Specifically, the Head of Research Services will play a key role in developing and implementing the Law Library's outstanding service program for law faculty. Reporting to the Associate Law Librarian for Public Services, the Head of Research Services also will participate in the Law Library's instructional programs, share in collection development responsibilities, and provide effective user services at the Reference Desk.
Duties and Responsibilities
•Under the general supervision of the Associate Law Librarian for Public Services and in consultation with the Associate Dean for Library and Information Services, takes primary responsibility for implementing the Library's faculty services program, including research, reference and interlibrary loan document delivery services. Serves as primary contact for law faculty requesting Library services. Coordinates with members of the Research Services team in performing research as requested.
•Oversees the coordination of instructional services provided to the Law School community. Participates in instructional and training programs, as required.
•Supervises one librarian and the Faculty Support Coordinator (responsible for interlibrary loan and document delivery); may add supervisees as library staff expands in due course. Will take primary responsibility for hiring, training and managing Library's student research assistant pool.
•Participates in the Law Library's collection development efforts, including selection, assessment and management of resources.
•Serves as a member of the Library's reference services unit, working regular shifts at the Reference Desk.
•Represents the Law Library on various Law School, campus-wide, and Library System committees and at various meetings and other functions, as appropriate.
Qualifications
Required:
•J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited institution.
•Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent combination of relevant advanced degree and library experience.
•At least 3 years' successful experience in academic law libraries, providing research and other library services for law faculty.
•Significant experience teaching legal research skills, including preparing course materials and developing assignments. Demonstrated awareness of current trends in legal research instruction.
•Experience hiring, training and supervising employees in an academic law library.
•Extensive knowledge of the legal bibliography and legal research techniques in multiple formats.
•Successful experience and skill in providing reference services.
•Outstanding interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
•Ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team, in a dynamically changing environment.
Preferred:
•Experience in supervising law librarians.
•Strong professional record of scholarship.
•Experience in assessing and selecting collections in law.
The Law School
The University of California, Irvine School of Law opened its doors to its first class of 60 students in August 2009. Currently seventeen faculty are in place, with approximately four faculty to be added by July 1, 2010. The School of Law is founded on a program of innovative delivery of legal education, emphasizing experiential learning, interdisciplinarity, and public service grounded in instruction in core methods of legal analysis.

Salary & Benefits: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Preferred appointment level: $68,892 - $95,388 (Librarian I - Librarian V).
Librarians are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, thirteen paid holidays, and one day per month sick leave. The University has an excellent retirement system and offers a variety of group health, life, and disability insurance plans. Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of salary.
