Job Description Cornell University Library (CUL), an innovative top 10 research library, advances the universityís mission of teaching, learning, research, and outreach.


The Cornell University Library is seeking a new Director of IT Systems. If you are a creative, knowledgeable, and collaborative leader with deep experience in enterprise level IT, this is an opportunity to join one of the most advanced and innovative academic library IT teams in the world. You would manage a team of DevOps engineers, database developers, and applications support specialists who work to support the Libraryís IT development teams, cloud-based applications, and mission-critical 24x7x365 production services. You would have an opportunity to participate in an international collaboration of university libraries and vendors working on creating and implementing FOLIO (https://folio.org), an open source library services platform.

Weíve made great strides over the past few years in adopting configuration management, continuous integration, and cloud technologies. We are looking for a leader who can continue this momentum to make our development process more agile, our management more robust, and our services more reliable.

You would be part of a Library staff focused on a mission to support the full range of intellectual exploration at Cornell University, fostering connections and knowledge that help faculty, students, and researchers from around the world excel in research, scholarship, and creative expression. The Library supports and enhances faculty and student productivity through its extensive collections, cutting-edge services and facilities, and a deep network of digital resources. Its impact reaches beyond campus boundaries with initiatives that extend Cornellís land grant mission to a global focus.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelorís degree and 7-10 years of relevant technical and managerial experience.
In-depth understanding of information systems technology; expertise with system administration tasks in Linux and Windows environments; knowledge of shell scripting; experience managing databases.
Experience with analysis techniques and project management practices and tools.
Must be able to assume a leadership role in migrating to new software and hardware environments.
Must be able to communicate and interact effectively with other CUL staff members, members of Cornell Information Technologies staff, and technology vendor representatives.
Demonstrated experience directing technical staff supporting a complex and dynamic technical environment. Able to instruct and guide others as needed to complete project tasks. Able to interpret policies and procedures effectively to guide self and others.
Able to initiate new activities in support of goals.
Able to communicate with individuals having little or no technical training.

Preferred Qualifications:

Masterís degree in related field or equivalent experience.
Oracle database administration experience in Linux environments, including performance analysis and tuning.
Experience managing 24x7 technology operations.
Experience in cloud-based systems management, supporting both production systems and software development.
Experience with Voyager or other integrated library systems.
Experience managing MySQL or PostgreSQL databases.
Familiarity with Unix/Linux configuration management tools; knowledge of networking, file formats, and database design.
Experience with the development and maintenance of Web servers and applications.
Extensive breadth and depth in software tools, frameworks and standards as well as a proven ability to learn the successful application of new tools, frameworks and standards quickly.
Demonstrated collaborations with open source software communities that develop shared software and services that mutually benefit libraries and other institutions.
