Job Description The Catalog Librarian for Special Collections will collaborate with colleagues in the VCU Libraries and within the library profession to describe rare and unique publications and other materials in order to make them discoverable to users worldwide. This position connects strongly with the VCU Librariesí mission to enrich scholarship and learning by making its unique collections accessible to students and scholars in their pursuit of the creation of new knowledge.

Position Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Metadata and Discovery, the Catalog Librarian for Special Collections is primarily responsible for the creation of original and copy bibliographic records for rare and unique publications and other materials.

The Catalog Librarian for Special Collections creates and edits metadata according to local and national cataloging and metadata standards. Solves bibliographic access problems. Plans and manages special projects as assigned. Collaborates on workflows with Special Collections and Archives. The position may work with library collections outside of Special Collections as required.

The Catalog Librarian for Special Collections is expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Faculty with the VCU Libraries are evaluated, and promoted, on the basis of job performance, scholarship, and professional development and service.

Required Qualifications
ALA-accredited graduate degree or accredited graduate degree in another appropriate discipline. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications
At least two years cataloging experience. Ability to create original as well as copy bibliographic records for rare and special collections materials. Knowledge of best practices for materials handling, preservation, and security for special collections. Working knowledge of MARC and non-MARC metadata schemas, RDA, AACR2, LC subject headings and classification, Medical Subject Headings, and EAD, DACS, and DCRM. Experience with NACO, BIBCO or other PCC programs. Experience using OCLC Connexion and Ex Librisí Alma. Experience with MarcEdit or other MARC editing tools. Experience working with arts, artistsí books and comic arts collections. Knowledge of languages other than English. Experience training and supervising student assistants. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Experience at urban research institutions, HBCU or minority serving institutions is desired.
