AIM's Project Team Tackles San Francisco Public Library Project

After the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the entire San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) staff rolled up their sleeves and inventoried the circulating collection while the building was being cleaned up. It was a major project. At that time, the reference collections had not been inventoried because most of them were not barcoded. The original thought was not to barcode because the reference books were non-circulating.

AIM was selected to handle the project in January of 1995. The AIM team, consisting of a project manager, a copy cataloger and a group of inventory workers began in late January. The goal was 100,00 books inventoried and just over 5,000 books copy cataloged in 6 months. There were many challenges during the first phase of the project. The staff at SFPL facilitated the team's work by responding quickly to suggestions and bottlenecks.

Mary Landgraf, Assistant Chief of Technical Services, was instrumental in dealing with the challenges. She commented:

"AIM provided us with a team of high-caliber professional and technical staff....They handled it smoothly, swiftly and unobtrusively. The quality of their work and the high level of cooperation with departmental managers is impressive."

We are proud of the quality of work that the AIM team members maintained while reaching their target numbers!
